Uwe Spetzger
was born in Karlsruhe where he also attended the Humboldt Gymnasium. After completing his military service, he began studying human medicine at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Zurich. In 1990, he passed the US American medical exam (ECFMG). He began his neurosurgical training at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen in 1990. In 1996, Spetzger became a Senior Physician at RWTH-Aachen and completed a scientific internship at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 1999. After his habilitation, he worked for three years as Chief Resident at the Neurosurgical University Hospital in Freiburg, starting in 1999. In 2002, at the age of 39, he was elected Director of the neurosurgical clinic at the Städtischen Klinikum Karlsruhe.
Since 2008, Spetzger has been a faculty member of the Institute of Anthropomatics and Robotics of the Faculty of Informatics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where he currently fulfills his teaching duties as an Honorary Professor. Spetzger is a member of several national and international medical societies and was President of the German Academy of Neurosurgery from 2019 - 2021. From 2019 to September 2020, he was Medical Director of the Städtischen Klinikum Karlsruhe. Since 2021, he has been a Board Member of the KIT Freundeskreis und Fördergesellschaft e.V. (KFG) and PI of the life science groups of the Helmholtz Information & Data Science School For Health (HIDSS4Health).
